That's right, they all stem from the imagination, the creative thought, the fantastic. Accordingly, with a lot of goodwill, pretty much every work of fiction can be attributed to the fantasy genre. A “Top Fantasy List” would therefore either have to be very long or would leave out many great scores!

Denn der Nachfolger vom 1999 erschienenen Virtua Tennis (bzw. Power Smash in Japan und Tennis 2K2 in Nordamerika) bietet zwar neben der Slice-Ability – also einem Schlag mit Rückwärtsdrall – und nun auch Sportlerinnen keinen Modus mit zwei Bällen! Dabei verspricht die Zwei im Titel doch genau das, oder bin nur ich das? Wer mich kennt, der weiß zwei Dinge: Ich bin ein absoluter Ordnungsfetischist und interessiere mich null für schnelle Karren. Was im echten Leben gilt, überträgt sich indes nicht hundertprozentig auf die digitale Welt, weshalb meine Savegames häufig absolutes Chaos sind, mein Inventarmanagement in vielen Spielen zu wünschen übriglässt und ich der ein oder anderen Racing-Challenge nicht abgeneigt bin. Schließlich war Need for Speed nicht umsonst damals eine meiner Lieblingsreihen.

In meiner vorherigen Liste der Top 10 Soundtracks aus dem Jahr 2000 hatte ich damals dieses neue Tool, genannt ‚Chat-GPT‘, ausprobiert, um mir ein Ranking zusammenzustellen. Zwei Gedanken dazu: Man, ist das schon wieder lange her, dass KI offiziell an den Start ging; und man sollte echt überprüfen, was die KI einem da so zusammenstellt. Denn die hatte mir damals in ihre Vorschläge unter anderem Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty hineingeschmuggelt … das allerdings erst 2001 erschien. Das hatte ich damals aber nicht mehr überprüft, weshalb das Game so seinen Weg in meine selbsterstellte 2000er-Liste fand.

Top 100 Video game tracks 2
When I created my first Top 100 videogame tracks almost four years ago, I thought on the one hand that I had put my magnum opus into the world. On the other hand, I was very sure that I would certainly not bother a second time, let alone a third. Almost four years later, I'm about to write my 200th review and feel the need to celebrate in style. And because not only have a bunch of new soundtracks reached the world's auditory canals in the meantime, but I've also been able to catch up on many 'old favorites', the stars seem to have aligned for a second list.

I love top lists. After all, there is probably nothing more controversial, as it is ultimate, than a numerical list of your own preferences. The problem with this is that ranking them takes a lot of time and preparation. After all, you not only have to find a contingent of winners, but also comprehensively record the field of participants from which they emerge. This is probably the main reason why I created my last list a solid year ago. Fortunately, a lot has happened technologically in the meantime! So I asked Chat-GPT to put together a quick list of the top 10 video game scores for games released in the year 2000.

If you say Star Wars, you have to say John Williams as well as lightsaber, Darth Vader and Utinni(!). In hardly any other franchise spanning decades is the music such an integral part of the brand's identity. Even today, I get goosebumps when the title crawl starts and the fanfares ring out, heralding adventures in a galaxy far, far away. The typical Star Wars soundtrack is not only to be found in the movies or when streaming at home, but also in the video games.
