Nothing good I wager

Yager is one of those games whose full version was once included as a bonus in a computer game magazine and which you played solely because you had nothing else. Perhaps also because of the pretty screenshots. Doesn't change the fact that I remember about as much about the game as I do from physics class, although my knowledge in this regard was recently put to the test by our clogged toilet. Something about lots of explosions and the Germans were the bad guys - in the game, that is, not in my toilet ... although ... I digress. Like in Aquanox– or the Comanche-series, we fly through arcade shooter action, with Aquanox 2 in particular scoring points for its story and music. This is different with Yager from the studio of the same name.

Since I always listen to the soundtrack before a review in order to give a fair rating, I almost had to force myself to do so with Yager . The music is simply boring, off-the-peg and sometimes feels as if composer Claas Oehler (who I only found on vgmdb after more in-depth research) had fallen asleep on the keyboard while browsing through the synth database. A lot of droning and a lot of 'Hooots' from the electronic brass often drown out any hint of a theme, and songs like Cruisin‘ are more reminiscent of a SimCity 4 than a shooting gallery. Not even the theme of the main villain, Gunter van Berg, is in any way relevant - as is the entire soundtrack. Synhie strings, a little beat and a little drama, that's it! Perhaps the online search results rightly only list lawyers when I search for other works by the composer...

One other thing: I've apparently only heard half of the OST, because from what I gather from vgmdb , there are 10 more tracks that weren't part of my experience. Although that would be reason enough for me as a completionist to listen to the missing songs, I have to be honest: I don't really want to. And the internet obviously doesn't want that either, because I can't find the tracks anywhere anyway. So it's nice to have another premiere in the penultimate letter of the alphabet: an incompletely rated OST.

Nostalgia warning

The rating of the individual tracks is purely subjective and clearly colored by my own experience with the game. You can find out more in the article About Nostalgia.
