Bye-pass

When a game is only remembered for its controversy, that's never a good sign. In the case of Watch Dogs , a good 6 years ago, it was the enhanced trailers. What seemed like the graphics revolution back then is already outdated today, and while the game was briefly fun because of its hacker concept, the story was too stupid and protagonist Aiden was simply too pale to really get excited about. At least I think that was my criticism at the time. I don't really remember much about the game, except that it seemed to want to melt my PC.

It's a similar story with the music: the OST by Brian Reitzell, a composer with more of a TV background, doesn't leave a lasting impression either. An attempt is made to combine the main aspects of the game. On the one hand, the motif of the thriller-like story about the murder of Aiden's family, and on the other, the hacker scenario, including synthesizer noise, as we know it from Plague Inc. for example. It doesn't really work because these 'genres' are more suited to subtle background noise than to actually conveying a theme.

This gives us a pleasantly dark, sometimes thought-provoking and at times almost threatening atmosphere, but without any visual feedback it does not offer any entertainment qualities on its own. Only Ghost of the Past, stands out from the crowd, which feels like the bridge of an action set-piece - a nice action thriller without a theme or drama. If you like spacy synth music, you should listen to the Portal-series, and for thriller fans there's Indigo Prophecy.

Nostalgia warning

The rating of the individual tracks is purely subjective and clearly colored by my own experience with the game. You can find out more in the article About Nostalgia.
