Tasteless fantasy sundae
Yet another review in the 'not played' category. In fact, I only know Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning because we featured it in an issue of our gaming format 'WohnGameinschaft' - for anyone interested in the game, I'll link the episode below. So unfortunately I can't say anything about the gameplay or even the story, and thus will limit myself to talking about the music by Grant Kirkhope and Mark Cromer.
The composer, who used to write for the game developer Rare, delivers a well-rounded fantasy variety with the soundtrack, which could also be found in this form in music libraries such as Sonoton. Fully orchestrated, the entire instrumental palette is called upon, strings and drummers compete to see who can sound the most epic. It works really well, but it's not enough to really stand out. Where comparable game soundtracks such as those of Trine or Fable manage to create memorable melodies through targeted accentuation, the composers tend to follow in the footsteps of cinematic greats such as those of The Lord of the Rings-series.
However, in comparison to the genius of Howard Shore, the music of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning pales in comparison, nothing sticks - which is a shame, as I was actually looking forward to the OST because of the trailer music. Well, you can definitely listen to it, less critical listeners will probably enjoy it.
