This bangs!

In Furi, it's neither about a titular black stallion galloping across the steppe with flowing mane, nor about people with questionable clothing choices. Furi is a 2016 bullet-hell shooter - for those unfamiliar: you have to dodge a lot of things while everything is flashing. While this genre is appealing to many gamers, for me, it's only mildly enjoyable. It tends to lean too much towards mindlessly memorizing attack patterns and sequences, which lately annoyed me quite a bit even during the relatively simple boss fight of A Plague Tale: Innocence. Dark Souls, we probably won't be friends in this lifetime.

However, despite its suggestive name, Furi is not supposed to be as unfair and rage-inducing, especially since the game skips the eternal preamble and lets your jump straight from boss to boss. How and whether this works, I can't judge unfortunately since I haven't played it. Instead, I took a closer look at the soundtrack and I must say, I quite like it. It wasn't produced by one, not two, and not even three composers, but rather by 5 DJs who seem to understand their electro craft. Driving rhythms with bass-heavy beats fit perfectly with the action-packed gameplay, but are also enjoyable outside of it.

At times, the music sounds like the illegitimate child of an 80s Hollywood flick à la Robocop and the synth sounds of Transport Tycoon, then again like modern club rave with hints of Skrillex and Zedd. Personally, I'm most drawn to the tracks by the French musician Danger, which are similarly aptly named. They just make you want to keep listening and immerse yourself in this trance-like state while sinking into the beats. My tip on that note: Audiosurf from 2008, a cute game where you ride a track to the rhythm of the music. I can imagine it pairing very well with this soundtrack.
