Hextech Mayhem – A League of Legends Story

Year: 2021
Type: Original Soundtrack (OST)
Composer(s): Grant Henry [Stemage]
Number of tracks: 30

Cuddly, gaudy children's game

In the trailer for Hextech Mayhem the slogan "Make Musical Mayhem!" is used to advertise the game. This is not surprising, as the spin-off from the League of Legends-universe is a rhythm game. We control the furry Yordle Ziggs known from the MOBA, who gives free rein to his bombastic destructive rage in this autoscroller.

As the player, all we have to do is press or hold the up, down or action buttons at the right moment to dodge enemies or throw explosives at them. Because, in addition to the indicators, the beat of the music also tells us when we should press, Hextech Mayhem is most similar to the music levels from Rayman Legends or, most recently, Super Mario Wonder.

If we crash into an obstacle anyway because we missed the mark or pressed the wrong button, the game automatically rewinds and lets us try again. This reduces the potential for frustration and further streamlines the super-simple gameplay. Hextech Mayhem therefore serves as a nice snack for gaming beginners.

As a result, veterans of video games will look in vain for sophisticated gameplay, while soundtrack sommeliers will also have to prepare themselves for more standard fare. Although the 30-track OST by composer Grant Henry, also known as Stemage, sounds pleasantly harmonious and suitable for children, it is not really exciting.

The main motif, which is played on various guitars throughout the majority of the tracks, can be heard through relatively quickly despite its catchiness. The different versions in punk, rock and metal guise provide variety, but this doesn't really add any value. However, I don't want to be too harsh, as the nature of the game dictates the form of the score exceptionally strongly. Fans of fun-focused-games like Fall Guys might find it interesting, but for me it's a bit of a bore.
