Colin McRae Rally 2005 marks the end of the early phase of the series. Musically, this is less of a new beginning than a controlled continuation of what had already been established. Accordingly, the selection within the compilation is manageable: six tracks, divided between the intro, FMV, promo piece, and the obligatory win and lose jingles.
The length of the central pieces is particularly striking. Both the Intro and the FMV-music are available in extended versions, giving the score more room to breathe than the functional miniatures from CMR 04 did. The music seems calmer, more sedate, almost reflective. Less forward momentum, more overview.
Stylistically, Jonathan Colling remains true to his electronic roots. Techno and house elements are still present, but they seem toned down and smoother in production. Nothing stands out, nothing surprises. Even the Promo Music-piece reliably fulfills its task without setting its own accents. It is music that knows where it belongs – and stays right there.
The short jingles for victory and defeat underline this impression. They are functional, clear, and interchangeable. No emotional explosion, no frustration, no feeling of triumph – just an acoustic signal that a section has ended. This also fits in with a game that focuses less on dramatization and more on continuity.
For me personally, Colin McRae Rally 2005 is a coherent but unspectacular conclusion. The music is cleanly produced, expertly arranged, and completely free of friction. At the same time, this is precisely what it lacks to keep me engaged for longer. Whereas CMR 2.0 still works thanks to its nostalgic appeal and CMR 04 impresses with its scope, 2005 feels like a quiet fade-out. Respectful, quiet, and without any great desire to revisit it.
